Project Overview x

While HDL was providing design services for the Atqasuk Airport Rehabilitation Design project, the NSB requested that HDL evaluate whether bedrock in the area could be developed to provide a material source for the ongoing airport project and other future work.

HDL performed a geophysical evaluation at two of the outcrops identified in the previous reconnaissance and other selected locations near Atqasuk. In addition, HDL conducted two seismic surveys along the airport embankments, four seismic surveys near the abandoned Meade River mine, and two seismic surveys at a linear feature located approximately 15 air miles east of Atqasuk.

The seismic surveys measured shear wave velocities of the subsurface materials to a depth of up to 100 feet below ground surface. This data was used to locate potential material sources, and HDL provided a geophysical report to the NSB detailing and interpreting the data.
